The judges thought this brilliant in its simplicity in linking two housing estates with very different cultural identities. We particularly welcomed the fact that it is driven by local people who took the initiative to resolve their differences and create further understanding.
Commended projects
Leicester Multicultural Advisory Group: Promoting community cohesion in Leicester
Excellent leadership and strategic approaches, with good involvement from the local media impressed the judges. We were pleased to see the willingness of the Advisory Group to tackle difficult issues and reach out to newly emerging groups. Judges saw this as an approach that could be adopted across other cities facing similar
issues.
Local level
Judges thought this was a fascinating cost-effective approach to bring people together that could be replicated anywhere in the UK. We thought that it was an innovative project encouraging people to learn about different lives and cultures.
Sandwell PCT: Rewind
Judges thought this was a small project with big reach that presented an innovative approach to anti-racism training. By challenging the idea of 'race' it builds bridges between communities. Judges welcomed the peer education and train the trainer approaches that helps to take anti-racism training to a wide range of people, while developing skills
in young people.
Shortlist
Downshall Primary School: TEAM
Judges were impressed at the range of different activities used to promote harmony and the involvement of grandparents, parents, pupils and the local community in these activities. We thought that Downshall Primary School had created an excellent multi-cultural environment and that many other schools could adopt this approach.
Holywell Primary School: CUBES
Judges thought this was an excellent initiative. It is very creative with a range of activities linked to learning and language and lots of involvement from parents. We thought this was an exciting project that would help pupils at Holywell Primary School to become part of a global culture.
