Awards for Bridging Cultures
Voluntary or community sector projects with an annual income of over £1 million
Winner: Shoreditch Trust: Shoreditch Festival
This was seen as an excellent project bringing people together from different age groups and cultures. We were especially impressed with linking older white people with young people from black and minority ethnic communities and the way this focused on building inter-cultural dialogue at a neighbourhood level.
Commended projects
Chichester Festival Theatre: Building Bridges
This gives refugees, asylum seekers and migrant workers practical skills to adapt to life in the UK while building bridges with young, local people. Judges thought this was an excellent project in an area of relatively new migrant settlement. We liked the way that story telling and theatre work shops were used to teach English to new
communities.
Stoke on Trent Citizens Advice Bureau: learning to advise / training scheme for refugees and asylum seekers
Judges though this was an excellent example of building skills and creating opportunities for employment for refugees and asylum seekers with benefits for local volunteers. We felt that there was a clear need for this work given the challenges faced in Stoke on Trent and that success here could provide a strong lead to projects in other
areas.
Watford FC Community, Sports and Education Trust
Judges thought this was an excellent partnership project that reached out to many young people helping them to form friendships and understanding across different cultures and backgrounds. We particularly welcomed the links between promoting inter-cultural dialogue while tackling anti-social behaviour and the way the project helped to build self-esteem
amongst young people.
Shortlist
Crisis English Club
Judges highlighted this creative, practical way to teach English while providing opportunities for participants to form links with others from different backgrounds. We though this was a vibrant project with real benefits for participants.
Refugee Action: Refugee Awareness Project
Judges thought this was a well targeted project raising awareness and tackling myths associated with refugees and asylum seekers with local community groups. We felt this had a really good impact in terms of reach and the number of people and organisations involved.
